Belted King Fishers ~ Oh, to Fly! ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This belted kingfisher watercolor art captures a pair of the most charismatic fishing birds in North America. Belted kingfishers are loud, fast, and fearless — they hover above streams and rivers, spot their prey, and plunge headfirst into the water with a commitment that's thrilling to watch. The female is actually more colorful than the male, wearing a rust-colored belt across her white chest that the male lacks. "Oh, to Fly!" is right — these birds live for the dive.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The kingfisher's blue-gray plumage is one of those colors that looks simple until you try to mix it — it's cool but not cold, metallic but not harsh. The natural mineral pigments gave me the exact tone I needed, built through wet-on-wet washes that let the blue settle into the paper with a shimmer that shifts in different light. The shaggy crest and oversized bill — the kingfisher's most distinctive features — emerged through confident, decisive brushstrokes.
This painting sits within my Oh, to Fly! collection, which primarily features large waterbirds, but the kingfisher's diving intensity earned its place. They dive from perches or hover, plunging headfirst into streams with a commitment that never fails to impress. The shaggy double crest and oversized bill give them a personality that's impossible to ignore.
