Osprey in Flight ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This osprey in flight painting captures a single osprey mid-air — wings angled, body streamlined, every feather arranged for speed. There's a difference between a bird that's flying and a bird that's hunting, and this osprey is hunting. The focus is visible in the posture: head down, talons tucked, trajectory locked. Ospreys are one of the few raptors that dive feet-first into water, and this painting catches the instant before the dive begins.
I worked freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. Painting a bird in motion means capturing the aerodynamics — the way the primary feathers separate at the wing tips, the twist of the body against the air, the relationship between speed and control. Wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes give the brown-and-white plumage its natural warmth without overworking the details. Alla prima, one session.
My Oh, to Fly! collection features several osprey paintings, each exploring a different phase of flight and hunting. "Osprey in Flight" is the most streamlined — pure momentum captured on paper. Ospreys' flight mechanics differ from other raptors — they hold their wings in a distinctive M-shape that reduces drag and allows them to hover briefly before a dive. That unique silhouette is immediately recognizable against any sky, and painting it required understanding the specific aerodynamics that shape the wing posture.
