Sandhill Crane ~ "Bliss" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This sandhill crane watercolor art captures a crane in total contentment. "Bliss" shows a sandhill crane at rest — not hunting, not dancing, not defending territory, but simply existing in a state of perfect peace. The head is turned slightly, the body relaxed, the wings folded. Everything about this bird says: there is nowhere else I need to be.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The warm grays and russet tones of the sandhill's plumage were built through wet-on-wet washes with natural mineral pigments. Painting contentment is harder than painting drama — the temptation is always to add more, do more. "Bliss" required restraint. Fewer strokes. More trust in what the paper and pigment would do on their own. Alla prima, one session.
Among my sandhill crane paintings in the Oh, to Fly! collection, "Bliss" is the quietest. Where "Ascend" captures explosive energy and "Rejoice" captures celebration, this one captures the reward — the stillness that follows. Sandhill cranes mate for life and can live over twenty years. That longevity gives their quieter moments a weight that young birds don't yet carry. This is a bird that has earned its peace. The warm russet feathers — stained by the iron-rich mud cranes preen into their plumage each season — add an earthiness that grounds the entire composition and connects the bird to its landscape. One of a kind. Ideal for bedrooms, reading rooms, and spaces where calm is the goal. Optium Museum Plexi framing available.
