Sandhill Crane ~ "Grace" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This sandhill crane watercolor is a portrait of pure elegance. "Grace" captures a sandhill crane in a moment of stillness that holds more power than movement ever could — head turned, neck curved, every line of the body flowing with the kind of effortless poise that gives the painting its name. Sandhill cranes are among the most ancient birds on earth, and they carry that weight of time in everything they do.
I painted this piece freehand, alla prima, on archival cotton rag paper using handmade Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The sandhill crane's plumage is a study in subtlety — warm grays with hints of russet, a crown of red that demands restraint from my brush. Working wet-on-wet let me build the soft, feathered texture of the body while keeping the red cap sharp and alive. The contrast between softness and precision is what makes this bird so compelling to paint.
"Grace" is part of my Oh, to Fly! collection. At this scale, the crane's form fills the composition with a quiet authority that commands wall space. It's ideal for living rooms, studies, and entryways — spaces where contemplative beauty belongs.
