Sandhill Crane ~ "Let's Dance" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This sandhill crane original art captures the electric moment when a crane commits to the dance. "Let's Dance" shows the bird mid-leap — legs extended, wings flaring, head thrown back in what can only be described as abandon. Sandhill crane courtship dances involve leaps, bows, wing-flaps, and stick-throwing, and they look less like mating displays and more like pure joy. This painting catches the peak of that joy.
I worked freehand, alla prima, on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The motion in this painting comes from the brushwork itself — loose, confident strokes that move with the bird rather than trying to freeze it. The warm grays and red crown were built through wet-on-wet washes with natural mineral pigments, each layer adding depth without weighing down the energy.
My Oh, to Fly! collection includes several sandhill crane paintings, each capturing a different aspect of crane behavior. "Let's Dance" is the most kinetic — pure movement, pure life, painted in a single session with no corrections. The crane's fossil record stretches back over two million years, and their dances are among the oldest courtship rituals on the planet. Painting this moment connected me to something ancient — a gesture of joy that predates human civilization. My decades of life drawing at the New York Academy of Art are what allow me to capture a four-foot bird mid-leap and have the anatomy hold together freehand. One of a kind. This painting brings powerful, celebratory energy to living rooms, great rooms, and entryways where movement and joy set the tone. Optium Museum Plexi framing available.
