Sandhill Crane: Ready to Dance ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This sandhill crane painting captures the moment just before the dance — that electric instant when a crane lowers its head, spreads its wings, and commits to the choreography that has defined its species for millions of years. "Ready to Dance" is one of the most dynamic pieces in my Oh, to Fly! collection. Where "Grace" (also in this collection) captures the crane in stillness, this painting is all about the energy coiled just before release.
I painted it freehand in a single session on archival cotton rag paper using handmade Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The warm grays and russets of the sandhill's plumage were built through wet-on-wet washes, with the red crown serving as the painting's focal point — a flash of intensity against the softer tones of the body. Alla prima technique means every mark is final. No going back. That urgency is what gives the crane its living energy on the paper.
Sandhill cranes are among the oldest bird species on the planet. Their courtship dance is legendary — a display of jumps, bows, and wing flaps that looks like pure celebration. This painting catches the breath before that celebration begins.
