White Ibis ~ "The Professor" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This white ibis original painting captures a bird that looks like it's about to deliver a lecture. "The Professor" shows a white ibis standing with scholarly composure — head slightly elevated, curved orange bill held like a pointer, body language projecting quiet authority. White ibises are among the most common wading birds in Florida, but they carry themselves with a dignity that belies their abundance. This one looked like it had something important to say.
I worked freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. As with all my white bird paintings, the challenge was building the ibis's form without relying on a dark background. The "white" plumage is constructed entirely from shadows and reflected light — pale blues under the wings, warm tones on the chest, the orange-red of the bill and legs providing the composition's warmth. Wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes allowed these subtle tones to merge and settle naturally.
Among my white ibis paintings in the Oh, to Fly! collection, "The Professor" is the most composed. Where "Tell Me More" is curious and engaging, this one is authoritative and calm. White ibises are among Florida's most abundant birds, traveling in flocks that can number in the thousands, yet each individual carries a quiet dignity that rewards close observation. The curved orange bill is one of the most distinctive shapes in bird anatomy — perfectly designed for probing soft mud — and it became the compositional anchor that gives this painting its scholarly character.
