Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds — Grace
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
Every hummingbird watercolor print in this group started with one of the greatest technical challenges in bird painting: iridescence. Hummingbird color isn’t pigment — it’s structural, created by microscopic feather platelets refracting light. The throat of a ruby-throated hummingbird shifts from black to blazing ruby depending on the angle. A rufous hummingbird burns copper to garnet. Suggesting that in a static medium like watercolor is where my training and my materials meet head-on.
I paint hummingbirds freehand with Kissho Gansai mineral pigments on archival cotton rag paper. The natural minerals in these handmade pigments carry a shimmer that synthetic paints can’t replicate — it’s as close to structural color as watercolor gets. Whether the painting captures a single bird hovering at a flower or two hummingbirds in aerial conversation, each composition holds the intensity of a creature whose heart beats over a thousand times per minute. Every giclée is printed in my Pawtucket studio, color-matched to the original.
Hummingbird prints bring concentrated energy to kitchens, sunrooms, and any bright space that can match their vibrancy.

Materials: Prints of my original, handmade pieces are made using only archival inks on heavyweight archival rag paper by Moab designed to last a lifetime. Learn more about my materials and process.
Framing: All work is elegantly framed in pristine white handmade wooden frames. The frames are 1.5" deep and handcrafted from solid wood by my favorite local framer.
A Note About Your Print's Edges: Each print arrives with a thin 1/8" white border all around—this bit of breathing space ensures that more of the image remains visible when framed, as standard framing techniques can obscure the edges.
If you prefer your image printed edge-to-edge without this margin, simply add a note with your order requesting "full-frame printing" and I'll happily accommodate.
My promise is to deliver your art exactly as you envision it in your space.
