Peregrine Falcon ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This peregrine falcon pastel art captures the fastest animal on the planet. In a hunting stoop, peregrines exceed 240 miles per hour — faster than any cheetah, any fish, any machine nature has ever built. But the stoop isn't what defines this painting. "Shadows of the Sky" captures the peregrine in stillness — perched, watching, the speed held in reserve like a coiled spring. The potential is more compelling than the act.
I worked in pastel to build the falcon's dark helmet, barred chest, and powerful shoulders through layered strokes that create physical texture on the paper. Pastel's dry immediacy suits the peregrine's nature — there's nothing soft or blended about this bird. The dark markings are bold and decisive, the yellow feet and eye ring provide sharp accents, and the overall palette moves between cool grays and warm browns in tight, controlled transitions.
My Shadows of the Sky collection is dedicated to raptors and owls rendered in pastel. The peregrine falcon is the collection's most aerodynamic subject — every line on this bird was shaped by speed, even at rest. In a hunting stoop, peregrine falcons fold their wings tight against their body and tuck their talons, becoming a teardrop-shaped projectile that cuts through the air at speeds that would destroy any other bird. Every aspect of their anatomy — the baffled nostrils that prevent lung damage at speed, the nictitating membrane that protects the eyes — is refined for velocity.
