Snowy Owl ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This snowy owl pastel art captures a bird that looks like it materialized from a winter landscape. Snowy owls are Arctic specialists — they breed on the tundra, hunt in open fields, and carry the stark, clean beauty of a world with no clutter. The white plumage isn't camouflage in the traditional sense. It's armor. A snowy owl sitting in a snow field is invisible until those enormous yellow eyes open and lock onto you.
I worked in pastel to build the owl's complex white plumage — which, like all "white" birds, is never truly white. The feathers carry dark barring, warm undertones, and shadow patterns that shift constantly. Pastel's layered, dry application let me build these subtle marks from the inside out, starting with warm base tones and adding the barring and shadow patterns on top. The yellow eyes were painted last — two points of fierce intensity against all that softness.
The snowy owl appears twice in my Shadows of the Sky collection — this piece and "Snowy Owl II." Together they explore the same bird from different angles. This first study is the more iconic — the classic snowy owl posture, eyes forward, fully alert. Snowy owls breed on the Arctic tundra during the endless summer daylight, making them one of the few owls that hunt by day. During irruption years, they move south in numbers that thrill birders across the northern states. Each bird's barring pattern is unique — a feather fingerprint that varies with age, sex, and individual identity.
