American Goldfinches Optimism ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This american goldfinch watercolor painting captures the birds that make summer feel like a celebration. I called this piece "Optimism" because that's what goldfinches embody — bright yellow songbirds bouncing between flowers, singing from every perch, turning an ordinary garden into something festive. American goldfinches are one of the latest-nesting songbirds in North America. They wait for thistles and sunflowers to seed before raising their young. Even their timeline is optimistic.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The goldfinch's breeding plumage is pure saturated yellow — a color that can easily overpower a composition if you let it. The mineral pigments handle it beautifully, producing a warm, luminous yellow that glows from within the paper. The black wings and cap provide the contrast that makes the yellow sing. Wet-on-wet washes let the botanical elements emerge naturally around the birds.
In my Songbirds & Friends collection, "Optimism" is one of the most immediately joyful pieces. It does exactly what the title promises — it lifts the mood of any room it enters. American goldfinches undergo one of the most dramatic molts in the bird world — transforming from drab olive-green winter plumage into brilliant yellow breeding dress each spring. That transformation mirrors the optimism in this painting's title. The goldfinch's strict vegetarian diet delays nesting until midsummer, when thistles and sunflowers provide the seeds their young need.
