Pileated Woodpecker Teacher ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This woodpecker watercolor painting captures a pileated woodpecker with the bold, dramatic presence these birds bring wherever they appear. "Teacher" is about the wisdom these large woodpeckers seem to carry — their deliberate movements, their intense focus, the way they work a tree with methodical patience. I've always felt there's something ancient about pileated woodpeckers. They look like they know things.
I painted this freehand using handmade Gansai pigments from Kyoto, working wet-on-wet on archival cotton rag paper. The pileated's striking red crest demanded pigments that could hold both intensity and transparency — the Gansai reds deliver that beautifully. The black and white of the body was built in confident, bold strokes that match the bird's own boldness. This isn't a shy, delicate piece. It has presence.
"Teacher" is part of my Songbirds & Friends collection, though a pileated woodpecker is admittedly not much of a songbird. These larger-than-life garden visitors earn their place in the collection through sheer personality — when a pileated woodpecker arrives, everyone notices.
