Tufted Titmice Three Wisemen ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This tufted titmouse watercolor art captures three titmice perched together — a trio with the energy of birds who know exactly what they're doing. I called them "Three Wisemen" because tufted titmice carry themselves with a kind of alert confidence that feels knowing. They're one of the boldest feeder birds in eastern North America: first to arrive, last to leave, and the ones that scold you if you're slow refilling the seed.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. Three birds in one composition means three sets of relationships — to each other, to the perch, and to the viewer. Each titmouse has its own posture and expression while sharing the same palette of soft grays, warm peach flanks, and that distinctive peaked crest. The mineral pigments built those subtle tones through wet-on-wet washes, with each bird emerging in a single alla prima session.
The Songbirds & Friends collection celebrates the everyday birds that make life more interesting. Tufted titmice are the neighborhood characters — small, loud, bossy, and completely endearing. This painting catches three of them in the act. Tufted titmice are the neighborhood alarm system — they sound off when a hawk passes over, when a cat is prowling, when anything in their territory changes. Other birds rely on their warnings. Painting three together captures that social intelligence — these are birds that watch, communicate, and respond as a unit. The gray-and-peach palette is subtle but rich in tonal variation.
