White-breasted Nuthatch ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This white-breasted nuthatch watercolor captures the bird that walks upside down. Nuthatches are the only songbirds that routinely descend tree trunks headfirst — a skill that gives them access to insects other birds miss. There's something delightfully contrary about a bird that looks at a tree and decides to go down instead of up. This painting catches that headfirst perspective.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The blue-gray back, black cap, and white face were built through wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes — a palette that's cool and clean, matching the bird's no-nonsense personality. The inverted posture makes the composition immediately distinctive. That evolutionary niche makes them smarter feeders, not just acrobatic ones. The blue-gray, black, and white palette is clean and crisp, matching the bird's no-nonsense approach to life.
A charming, conversation-starting original from my Songbirds & Friends collection. The headfirst posture makes this painting instantly recognizable and delightfully different from typical bird art. One of a kind. Free shipping, complimentary insurance, and certificate of authenticity included. Framing options available.
