Blue Jay ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This blue jay watercolor painting captures the loudest personality in any backyard. Blue jays are bold, intelligent, and entirely unapologetic about taking up space. They mimic hawk calls to scare other birds away from feeders. They cache thousands of acorns. They travel in noisy family groups and announce themselves before they arrive. This painting catches that confident, unmissable energy.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The blue jay's plumage is a masterwork of pattern — vivid blue wings barred with black and white, a crisp crest, a black necklace around a white throat. The blues were built through wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes that give the color its characteristic brightness without pushing it toward garish. The barred wing pattern required precise brushwork while keeping the overall feeling loose and alive.
Blue jays are a cornerstone of my Songbirds & Friends collection. Where chickadees charm and goldfinches delight, the blue jay demands attention. It's the painting equivalent of a bird that lands on your feeder and stares you down. Blue jays are in the corvid family — cousins of crows and ravens — and they're every bit as smart. They're also one of the few songbirds that mimic hawk calls — a trick that clears feeders of competition.
