Roseate Spoonbill ~ "Good Times Are Ahead" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This roseate spoonbill original painting is exactly what its name promises — optimism made visible. "Good Times Are Ahead" captures a spoonbill moving forward with purpose, its impossible pink plumage catching light, its posture carrying the unmistakable energy of a bird that knows where it's going. Roseate spoonbills are one of nature's great acts of exuberance, and this painting leans all the way into that joy.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai watercolors from Kyoto. The pinks — and there are many shades of pink in a spoonbill — were built through layered wet-on-wet washes with natural mineral pigments. Each layer deepens the luminosity. The curved bill and distinctive flat spatula shape at the tip is one of the most challenging forms in bird anatomy, and getting it right demanded every bit of my classical training at the New York Academy of Art.
This original is part of my Oh, to Fly! collection, which explores the grand waterbirds whose presence commands attention. Among the spoonbill paintings in this collection, "Good Times Are Ahead" is the most forward-looking — it has a momentum that pulls the viewer with it. Roseate spoonbills were hunted nearly to extinction in the late 1800s for their pink plumes. Their recovery is one of conservation's genuine success stories, and painting them feels like celebrating a second chance. Spoonbills feed by sweeping their flat bills side-to-side through shallow water, detecting fish and crustaceans by touch rather than sight. That unique foraging style gives them their distinctive head movement and posture, and understanding how they move is what lets me paint them authentically.
