Baby Ruby Throated Hummingbird Trust ~ "Little Wonders" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Little Wonders
This baby hummingbird watercolor painting is one of the most tender pieces in my Little Wonders collection. "Trust" captures a ruby-throated hummingbird fledgling in that fleeting moment between the nest and first flight — still fluffy, still uncertain, but ready. I painted the tiny creature freehand, letting the Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto build up the soft iridescence of new feathers that haven't yet developed their full shimmer.
What draws me to baby birds is their honesty. They don't pose. This little hummingbird sits with its oversized head tilted slightly, its expression somewhere between curiosity and courage. The wet-on-wet technique lets the colors bleed and bloom the way real down feathers do — soft edges, luminous undertones, nothing too controlled. That looseness is the whole point. Birds aren't still, and neither should the painting be.
This is an original work on archival cotton rag paper, one of a kind. The Little Wonders series celebrates nature's smallest characters — the fledglings and misfits whose enormous personalities outsize their tiny frames. "Trust" is one of the collection's most beloved pieces, and an archival giclée print is also available for those who'd like a more accessible version.
