Bald Eagle ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This bald eagle pastel art strips away the patriotic symbolism and shows the bird for what it actually is — a massive, fierce raptor with a seven-foot wingspan and a gaze that makes you understand why nothing in the sky challenges it. I wanted to paint the eagle you'd see if you came around a bend in a river and found one staring at you from a dead tree. Not majestic. Not symbolic. Just powerfully, undeniably present.
I worked in pastel for this piece — part of my Shadows of the Sky collection, which explores raptors through a medium that suits their nature. Pastel sits on the paper's surface rather than soaking in, creating a tactile texture that gives feathers their physical weight. The layered strokes build from dark foundation tones outward, with the white head and tail emerging last from the surrounding darkness. The result has a three-dimensional quality that watercolor handles differently.
Shadows of the Sky is a departure from my watercolor collections. Where Oh, to Fly! celebrates color and fluidity, these pastels celebrate form, shadow, and the raw presence of birds that hunt. Bald eagles weren't always symbols of patriotism — they were nearly extinct in the lower 48 states by the 1960s, decimated by DDT and persecution. Their recovery to current numbers is one of conservation's greatest success stories. Painting one stripped of political symbolism and returned to its identity as a wild predator felt honest and necessary.
