Barn Owl ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This barn owl pastel painting is a departure from my watercolor work — and one of the most striking pieces in my studio. Barn owls have a face like no other bird: that heart-shaped disc, the dark eyes, the ghostly white feathers that make them look like they belong to a different world. I wanted to capture that otherworldly quality in pastel, a medium that lets me build the soft, smoky textures of owl plumage in ways watercolor doesn't.
Working in pastel gave me a different kind of intimacy with this bird. The dusty, layered strokes build the feathers from the inside out — warm tans and cinnamon on the wings, cool whites and silvers on the face and breast. The result has a depth and tactile quality that draws you in. Barn owls are nocturnal, and this painting carries that dusky, between-worlds atmosphere.
"Shadows of the Sky" is my collection of raptor and bird-of-prey portraits — paintings that capture the fierce, focused beauty of birds that hunt. A barn owl isn't technically a raptor in the strict ornithological sense, but its predatory grace and striking appearance earn it a place in this collection.
