Belted Kingfisher, Swamp Sparrow, Iris Pseudacorus ~ "Nature's Mastery" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
Some mornings the river gives you everything at once. A Belted Kingfisher holds still at the water's edge, rattling, watching for the flash of a fish below. A Swamp Sparrow keeps to the reeds nearby, quiet and unhurried. And the yellow flag iris stands over all of it, opening into the wet light. This is the kind of moment that started 'Songbirds & Friends' -- you walk in slowly, you listen, and if you are patient the whole scene arranges itself in front of you.
I painted it the way I paint all of these: wet-on-wet, in layers, with no drawing underneath -- just sketches, instinct, and years of learning how a kingfisher carries itself at the river. The three lives in this piece each keep their own rhythm, and the work is letting them share one quiet stretch of water without crowding each other.
This is an original watercolor on paper, one of a kind, the largest and most considered piece in the collection. It comes to you ready to live on a wall where a slow morning is welcome.
