Black Capped Chickadees Fly with Me ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This chickadee watercolor art captures a pair of black-capped chickadees in their most characteristic mode — active, curious, and completely unbothered by the world's problems. "Fly with Me" shows two chickadees in motion, their round bodies and tiny wings creating the buoyant, bouncing flight pattern that makes chickadees immediately recognizable. They're the birds that arrive first at every feeder and cheer up every winter morning.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. Chickadees are small birds with high contrast — jet-black caps, bright white cheeks, warm buff flanks — and the mineral pigments handle those clean transitions beautifully. Each bird was built through wet-on-wet washes that let the tones settle naturally, with the black cap emerging as a confident, single-pass stroke. The "fly with me" gesture comes from the composition: two birds moving in the same direction, inviting you along.
These are the everyday heroes of my Songbirds & Friends collection — nothing exotic, nothing rare, just pure personality. Anyone who feeds birds knows the chickadee's cheerful insistence. Black-capped chickadees have a remarkable adaptation for winter survival — each night they lower their body temperature by as much as 22 degrees Fahrenheit to conserve energy, a controlled hypothermia that lets them survive nights that would kill most songbirds. That toughness hides behind the friendliest face in the bird world. The high-contrast plumage — jet black and pure white — demands pigments that hold their edge.
