Cardinal Love ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This cardinal watercolor painting captures a pair of cardinals — the male in vivid, unmistakable red, the female in warm olive and russet — together in a moment that feels like devotion. "Cardinal Love" is one of the most emotionally resonant pieces in my Songbirds & Friends collection. Cardinals mate for life, and there's a tenderness in the way they perch near each other that I wanted to honor in this painting.
I painted both birds freehand using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto, working wet-on-wet on archival cotton rag paper. The male cardinal's red is one of the most intense colors in nature, and the Gansai pigments — made from natural mineral ingredients — give me a red that glows from within the paper rather than sitting on top of it. The female's subtler plumage required equal care: the warm browns and soft reddish tones that make her beautiful in a quieter way.
Cardinals hold deep personal meaning for many people — they're often associated with loved ones who've passed, with comfort, with the idea that someone is watching over you. I hear that from collectors more often with cardinals than with any other bird.
