Eastern Bluebirds: Happiness of the Bluebirds ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This eastern bluebird watercolor is pure contentment on paper. "Happiness of the Bluebirds" captures a pair of eastern bluebirds together — their cobalt backs and warm russet breasts glowing against soft botanical tones. Bluebirds have long been symbols of happiness, and this painting leans into that with its warm palette and relaxed composition. These two look like they're exactly where they belong.
I painted this piece freehand using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto, working wet-on-wet on archival cotton rag paper. The blues in eastern bluebird plumage are intense and pure — they demanded pigments that could hold that vibrancy without looking artificial. The Gansai colors deliver. The russet breast was built in careful washes that warm the painting and ground the cooler blues.
This original is part of my Songbirds & Friends collection, which celebrates the garden birds that bring joy to everyday life. Eastern bluebirds are among the most beloved backyard birds in America, and this painting honors that with a tone that's warm, inviting, and genuinely happy.
