Eastern Bluebirds ~ "Merry Is The Birds Life" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This eastern bluebird watercolor painting is a celebration of simple, uncomplicated happiness. "Merry Is The Birds Life" captures a pair of eastern bluebirds together — their cobalt backs and warm russet breasts glowing against soft botanical tones — with an expression of contentment that reminds you how good it feels to just be alive. The title borrows from an old saying, and these bluebirds live it completely.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai watercolors from Kyoto. Bluebird blue is one of the most intense and pure colors in the avian world, and it demanded pigments that could hold that vibrancy without looking artificial. The natural mineral Gansai pigments deliver — the blues glow from within the paper. The warm russet of the breast was built through careful washes that ground the cooler tones and give the painting its emotional warmth.
This is one of the larger and more commanding pieces in my Songbirds & Friends collection. Where many songbird paintings are intimate, this one has the presence to anchor a room. The dual composition — two birds, balanced, content in each other's company — adds a narrative element that resonates deeply with couples and families. My classical training at the New York Academy of Art informs every aspect of this painting — the balanced composition, the anatomical accuracy that lets the birds feel alive, and the confidence to let the mineral pigments do their work without overpainting. Eastern bluebirds were once in serious decline from habitat loss; their recovery through nest box programs makes them a genuine symbol of resilience. One of a kind. Free shipping, complimentary insurance, and certificate of authenticity included. Framing options including Optium Museum Plexi available.
