Florida Scrub Jay ~ "The Problem Solver" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
This florida scrub jay watercolor art captures one of the most endangered and intelligent birds in America. "The Problem Solver" shows a scrub jay mid-task — head tilted, eye bright, body language saying I've got this figured out. Florida scrub jays are the only bird species found exclusively in Florida. They're also remarkably smart — they cache thousands of acorns each fall and remember where nearly every one is buried. They plan ahead. They solve problems. This painting catches that energy.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The scrub jay's soft blue plumage, pale gray breast, and warm brown back create a more muted palette than you'd expect from a jay. Building those subtle blues through wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes produced a color that shifts between steel and sky depending on the light — just as it does on the living bird.
My Songbirds & Friends collection includes two florida scrub jay paintings. "Native Treasures" is the larger, more formal portrait. "The Problem Solver" is more candid — you're catching this bird in the middle of being brilliant. Florida scrub jays are cooperative breeders — young birds stay with their parents for years, helping raise the next generation of siblings before striking out on their own. That family structure makes them one of the most studied bird species in behavioral ecology. The soft blue plumage, paler than other jays, has a dusty quality the mineral pigments capture perfectly.
