Golden Crowned Kinglet, Yellow Daisy ~ "Golden Delight" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
The Golden-Crowned Kinglet is one of the tiniest birds in the woods -- barely heavier than a couple of coins -- with a brilliant gold stripe down the crown that lights up when it flares. It flits through the high branches, hovering to glean insects, calling in a voice so thin and high that many people never notice it at all. To see that flash of gold is a small, real delight.
I matched it with a yellow daisy, gold meeting gold, the bird and the bloom sharing one warm note. There is a quiet joy in the overlooked things, and this kinglet is one of them -- easy to miss, worth everything once you do. I painted it wet-on-wet, in layers, with no drawing first, working small and careful to keep that crown truly glowing.
