Great Blue Heron ~ "A Love Story" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This great blue heron original watercolor is about two birds choosing each other. "A Love Story" captures a pair of great blue herons in a moment of quiet togetherness — not the dramatic bill-clacking courtship display, but the tender stillness that comes after. When herons have chosen their mate, they stand near each other with a calm devotion that feels almost human.
I painted this freehand, alla prima (completed in a single session), on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. Two herons in one composition demanded careful attention to the relationship between the birds — the spacing, the angle of their necks, the way their plumage echoes and contrasts. Working wet-on-wet with natural mineral pigments, I let the blue-grays build gradually until both birds felt present and alive on the paper.
This original is part of my Oh, to Fly! collection. Among the many heron paintings in this series, "A Love Story" is the most intimate. It's not about power or solitude — it's about connection. Great blue herons are typically solitary hunters who guard their fishing territory fiercely, so when two choose to stand together, the moment carries real significance. My MFA training at the New York Academy of Art gave me the compositional tools to paint two large birds sharing a frame without either one diminishing the other — the balance between them is as deliberate as the balance within each bird's anatomy. One of a kind. A meaningful piece for living rooms, bedrooms, and spaces where love and partnership are celebrated. Couples and families connect with this painting immediately.
