Great Blue Heron ~ "Balance" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This heron watercolor original captures the precise moment equilibrium holds. "Balance" shows a great blue heron poised between two states — not quite still, not quite moving — with every line of the body in perfect tension. It's the kind of balance that looks effortless but isn't. Anyone who has watched a heron fishing knows this pose: total concentration, total control, total readiness.
I created this piece freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The blue-gray plumage was built through wet-on-wet washes that create the dimensional quality of real feathers — light catches differently across the body, and the natural mineral pigments reproduce that variation honestly. Alla prima (completed in a single session). One session. No revisions.
This original is part of my Oh, to Fly! collection. Where "Grace" explores stillness and "Feel The Sky" explores surrender, "Balance" lives in the tension between action and restraint. It's the most controlled painting in the series, and that control is the point. My decades of classical training at the New York Academy of Art are what make this particular painting possible — capturing a body in perfect equilibrium requires understanding the physics of how a four-foot bird distributes its weight on legs thin as reeds. The tension reads because the anatomy is real. One of a kind. Ideal for studies, offices, and living rooms where precision and poise set the tone. Collectors who value restraint over drama find this piece speaks directly to them — it's a painting that earns attention through stillness. Optium Museum Plexi framing available. Free shipping, complimentary insurance, and certificate of authenticity included.
