Great Blue Heron ~ "Grace" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This great blue heron original art captures the quality I find most compelling in these birds — the ability to be completely, utterly still. "Grace" shows a heron standing with that timeless composure, neck curved, body aligned with the kind of effortless poise that gave the painting its name. Great blue herons don't need to move to command attention. They just are.
I painted this freehand, alla prima (completed in a single session), on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai watercolors from Kyoto. The palette is restrained — soft blues, slate grays, and the warm tones of the heron's body built through layered wet-on-wet washes. The Gansai pigments, made from natural minerals, produce the subtle tonal shifts that make heron plumage so difficult and so rewarding to paint. One session, no corrections, no preliminary drawing. The discipline of the method mirrors the discipline of the bird.
"Grace" is a meditation painting. Where other pieces in my Oh, to Fly! collection capture dramatic movement — cranes dancing, spoonbills in flight — this one invites you to slow down. My MFA training at the New York Academy of Art gave me the anatomical foundation to paint this bird freehand and have every proportion ring true. The classical rigor is invisible, but it's what makes the stillness believable. The curved neck, the precise angle of the bill, the way the legs meet the water — each detail was painted in a single pass, trusting the years of training behind the brush. The palette in this painting is intentionally quiet — slate, dove gray, warm cream, and the soft yellow of the bill and legs providing the composition's warmth. Where my other heron paintings explore drama and movement, this one asks the viewer to find the extraordinary in the still.
