Great Blue Heron ~ "Perfect Patience" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This great blue heron original art captures the quality that defines these birds more than flight ever could — patience. "Perfect Patience" shows a heron standing perfectly still in shallow water, every muscle engaged in the act of waiting. Great blue herons can stand motionless for twenty minutes or more, watching for the flicker of a fish below the surface. It looks like calm. It's actually intense focus.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The still posture might seem like an easier subject than a heron in flight, but the opposite is true. When there's no motion to carry the composition, every proportion has to be exactly right. The long neck, the dagger bill, the way the legs disappear into water — any distortion reads immediately. Wet-on-wet washes built the blue-gray plumage in layers, each settling naturally into the paper.
Among my great blue heron paintings in the Oh, to Fly! collection, this one is the quietest. Where "Feel The Sky" captures surrender and "Spread Your Wings" captures release, "Perfect Patience" captures the bird at its most essential — watching, waiting, completely present. Herons can stand motionless for longer than most people realize — studies have recorded them waiting over thirty minutes for a single strike. That kind of commitment to stillness requires a different kind of strength than flight. The blue-gray tones of the plumage shift subtly depending on the light in your room, giving the painting a living quality that changes throughout the day.
