Great Blue Heron ~ "Solitude I" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This great blue heron painting is a portrait of chosen solitude. "Solitude I" captures a heron standing alone in still water, perfectly content in its own company. Great blue herons are solitary hunters. They don't travel in flocks. They don't need the reassurance of other birds. That self-sufficiency is what drew me to paint this moment — the beauty of a creature that is genuinely complete on its own.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai watercolors from Kyoto. The atmosphere in this painting mattered as much as the bird itself — soft washes of reflected light and muted water tones built through the wet-on-wet technique, with the heron emerging from the background as if it's part of the landscape rather than separate from it. Natural mineral pigments give the blue-gray plumage its luminous quality.
This is the first of two "Solitude" paintings in my Oh, to Fly! collection. Each explores a different aspect of the heron's solitary nature — this one contemplative, the second more resolute. My classical training at the New York Academy of Art taught me to see negative space as compositional structure, not emptiness. The space around this heron is as carefully composed as the bird itself — it's what gives the solitude its breathing room. The soft washes that create the water's surface let the heron exist in its own quiet atmosphere. One of a kind. A meditative piece for bedrooms, studies, and quiet spaces where you want art that invites reflection rather than demanding attention. Optium Museum Plexi framing available.
