Great Blue Heron ~ "Solitude II" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This heron watercolor painting is the second in a pair of solitude studies — companion pieces that explore the same theme from different angles. "Solitude II" captures a great blue heron alone in its landscape, entirely self-contained. Where "Solitude I" focuses on the bird's inward stillness, this piece places the heron in a wider context — space around it, air above it, the suggestion of water and shore without cluttering the composition.
I worked freehand with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto on archival cotton rag paper, alla prima (completed in a single session). The mineral pigments give the gray-blue plumage its characteristic luminosity — a cool shimmer that shifts depending on the light in your room. I kept the background spare on purpose. The emptiness isn't absence; it's the space the heron requires. These birds choose solitude. It's not loneliness. It's sovereignty.
The Oh, to Fly! collection includes both Solitude paintings, and collectors sometimes acquire them as a pair — but each stands completely on its own. The wider framing of this second study gives it a more expansive, environmental quality — you feel the landscape around the bird as much as the bird itself. "Solitude II" works particularly well in bedrooms, home offices, and meditation spaces where breathing room matters. One of a kind. Free shipping, complimentary insurance, and certificate of authenticity included. Framing options available.
