Great Blue Heron ~ "Spread Your Wings" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This blue heron original watercolor is an invitation to let go. "Spread Your Wings" captures a great blue heron at full extension — wings stretched to their widest span, body suspended in that extraordinary moment when gravity loosens its grip and the bird becomes part of the sky. It's the most open, most vulnerable, most magnificent posture a heron can hold.
I created this piece freehand using my Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto — natural mineral watercolors that produce the range of blue-grays in heron plumage with a luminosity that synthetic paints can't match. The alla prima technique means the entire painting happened in one session, wet-on-wet, with no preliminary sketch. At this scale, that's a high-wire act. Every brushstroke is permanent. The wingspan emerged in real time, just as it would in nature — one fluid motion.
This original is one of the premier pieces in my Oh, to Fly! collection, which celebrates the waterbirds whose presence commands any space they enter. I've painted herons my entire career, informed by decades of classical training at the New York Academy of Art and thousands of hours of life drawing. That anatomical knowledge is what gives the wings their structural truth — they don't just look open, they look aerodynamic. At this scale, the wingspan stretches across the paper with a physical presence that fills a wall. The weight and tension in those extended wings come from decades of studying avian anatomy through direct observation and classical figure drawing.
