Great Blue Heron ~ "Strength I" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This heron watercolor painting is about raw presence. "Strength I" captures a great blue heron at its most formidable — standing tall, every line of the body communicating quiet authority. This is the first in a series exploring what strength looks like when it doesn't need to prove itself. The heron isn't hunting. It isn't threatened. It's simply occupying space with an unshakeable composure that makes everything around it feel secondary.
I created this piece freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The blue-gray plumage was built through wet-on-wet washes that let the natural mineral pigments create depth and dimension on their own. Working alla prima — one session, no corrections — forced me to trust the process. Too much control would have deadened the energy. Too little would have lost the bird. "Strength I" lives in that balance.
My years of classical training at the New York Academy of Art and the Art Students League inform every anatomical decision in this painting. The heron's proportions, its weight distribution, the tension in the neck — all of this comes from decades of studying living anatomy through drawing and observation. Great blue herons stand nearly four feet tall, and their presence in the wild silences everything around them. I wanted "Strength I" to carry that same authority on paper — the kind of presence that makes a room quiet down and pay attention. One of a kind from my Oh, to Fly! collection. This is the first in a Strength series that explores power through composure. Ideal for studies, offices, and living rooms where quiet authority sets the tone. Optium Museum Plexi framing available.
