Great Blue Heron ~ "Strength II" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This heron watercolor original art captures the raw presence of a great blue heron at its most powerful. "Strength II" shows the bird standing tall, every line of its body communicating the quiet authority these herons carry. It's the second in a series exploring that quality — not aggression, but an unshakeable composure. Great blue herons don't need to prove anything. They just are.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The palette is restrained — blues, grays, and slate tones that let the heron's form do the talking. Working alla prima in a single session, I built the plumage through wet-on-wet washes that create the depth and dimension these birds carry in real life. The key was restraint. Too much detail would overwork the power; too little would lose the bird. The balance is what makes this piece work.
"Strength II" is part of my Oh, to Fly! collection, which celebrates birds whose presence commands the space around them. This painting is ideal for studies, offices, and living rooms where you want something quietly dramatic.
