Great Grey Owl ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This great grey owl pastel painting captures the largest owl in North America by length — a bird with a five-foot wingspan and a facial disc designed to funnel sound so precisely that it can locate prey beneath a foot of snow. The great grey owl looks soft and round, almost gentle, until you notice the eyes. Those yellow eyes see everything and forgive nothing.
I worked in pastel to capture the owl's extraordinary plumage — concentric rings of gray, silver, and brown radiating outward from those intense eyes. Pastel's dry, layered quality lets me build texture in a way that mirrors the owl's feathers themselves: dense, interlocking, insulating. Each stroke adds depth. The facial disc emerged through careful tonal gradation, ring by ring, until the eyes became the undeniable center of the composition.
This piece is part of my Shadows of the Sky collection — a body of pastel work dedicated to raptors and owls. The great grey owl is the collection's most hypnotic subject. Where the bald eagle commands through power and the peregrine falcon through speed, the great grey owl commands through stillness. It sits, it watches, and nothing escapes its attention. Great grey owls are primarily found in boreal forests and mountain meadows, where their extraordinary hearing allows them to locate voles and mice moving beneath snow. They plunge through the snow crust feet-first, catching prey they've never seen. That sensory precision is part of what makes the facial disc — evolved as a sound-collecting dish — the focal point of both the living bird and this painting.
