Horned Lark ~ "Shoreline Spirits" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Shoreline Spirits
This horned lark watercolor painting captures one of the world's most widespread songbirds — a bird found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Horned larks are ground birds, running along open fields and shorelines rather than perching in trees. Those tiny black "horns" — actually feather tufts — give them a distinctive silhouette that's easy to spot once you know what to look for.
I worked freehand on archival cotton rag paper with Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The bold black facial mask, yellow throat, and warm brown back were built through wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes. The horned lark's markings are graphic and precise — almost like someone painted the bird's face with a fine brush before I got there. Horned larks are ground-nesting birds that thrive in the most exposed, wind-swept habitats on earth — from Arctic tundra to desert flats to airport runways. Their tolerance for open, barren ground sets them apart from virtually every other songbird. The black facial mask and yellow throat create graphic markings that are bold for such a small bird.
