Joe Pye Weed, Rattlesnake Weed ~ "Nature's Cure" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
There is no bird in this one -- the plants are the whole story, and both of them carry old healing lore. Joe Pye Weed rises in tall mauve clouds at the edge of late-summer meadows, humming with butterflies and bees, named in the old stories for a healer who used it. Rattlesnake weed was one of the country remedies people once trusted. Together they make a field that has always been, in its own way, nature's medicine.
There is a real cure in a morning spent out here -- the air, the sound, the slow attention -- and that quiet mending is what I was after, not a literal apothecary. I painted it wet-on-wet, in layers, with no drawing first, letting the mauve of the Joe Pye Weed go soft and deep so the whole field feels like it is breathing.
