Osprey ~ "The Fisherman" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This osprey watercolor painting captures the bird I consider nature's most skilled hunter. "The Fisherman" shows an osprey in its element — focused, calculated, every sense tuned to the water below. Ospreys catch fish on roughly 70% of their dives, a success rate that puts every other fishing bird to shame. That competence is what I wanted this painting to convey. Not ferocity — mastery.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The osprey's brown-and-white plumage is bold and graphic, and the wet-on-wet technique let me build the contrast between the dark back and bright breast with layers of natural mineral pigment that hold their edge without looking harsh. The yellow eyes — intense and unwavering — became the painting's focal point. Alla prima. One session. One chance.
"The Fisherman" occupies a unique place in my Oh, to Fly! collection. While herons stand still and cranes dance, the osprey hunts. It brings a different kind of energy — watchful, patient, explosive when the moment comes. Ospreys are the only raptors in North America that hunt exclusively fish — their feet have evolved specialized barbed pads and a reversible outer toe designed for gripping slippery prey. That evolutionary specificity fascinates me, and it's part of what made this bird so compelling to paint. My classical training at the New York Academy of Art gave me the anatomical foundation to render those powerful talons and the torque of the hunting posture with freehand accuracy. One of a kind. This painting commands attention in studies, offices, great rooms, and anywhere that benefits from focused, purposeful energy. Optium Museum Plexi framing available.
