Roseate Spoonbill ~ "The Dream Makers" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This roseate spoonbill watercolor painting is one of the most visually arresting pieces in my studio. "The Dream Makers" captures spoonbills in their impossible palette — vivid pinks and corals and salmon tones that look more like a fever dream than a real bird. Roseate spoonbills are nature's evidence that beauty doesn't need to be subtle. They are loud, unapologetic, and completely themselves. This painting honors that.
I worked freehand, alla prima, on archival cotton rag paper using my Kissho Gansai watercolors from Kyoto. The pinks in this painting are built through layered wet-on-wet washes — each pass of natural mineral pigment deepening the luminosity until the color glows from within the paper rather than sitting on top of it. The curved spoonbill bill and outstretched wings create a composition that's at once elegant and surprising. It's not a bird most people expect to see in a watercolor gallery, and that element of discovery is part of what makes this piece special.
My work has been collected by Google's Quantum AI campus, The Langham Hotel Boston, and MOCA Jacksonville — institutions that seek art with genuine presence. "The Dream Makers" has that same stopping power. It transforms the wall it hangs on from a surface into a window onto something wild and real. The pink in a spoonbill's plumage comes from carotenoid pigments in the crustaceans they eat — the same chemistry that makes flamingos pink. Every flock carries slightly different tones depending on their diet and habitat, and I paint each bird's specific pink rather than a generic one.
