Roseate Spoonbill ~ "Welcome" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This roseate spoonbill watercolor radiates openness. "Welcome" captures a spoonbill in a posture of invitation — wings slightly spread, body facing forward, the whole bird oriented toward whoever is looking. Roseate spoonbills are among the few wading birds that seem genuinely comfortable being watched, and this painting leans into that quality. It doesn't just hang on a wall. It opens the room.
I worked freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The warm pinks of the spoonbill's plumage were built through layered wet-on-wet washes — each pass of mineral pigment adding saturation and depth while the paper's texture creates natural variation. The outstretched wings required confident brushwork at scale, each feather suggested through gesture rather than tight rendering. Alla prima, one session.
The Oh, to Fly! collection includes several roseate spoonbill paintings, each with a distinct emotional signature. "Welcome" is the most outward-facing — a painting that connects with viewers immediately. The warm pinks range from pale ballet slipper to deep rose, a spectrum that comes from the bird's diet of crustaceans and that the Gansai mineral pigments reproduce with remarkable fidelity. Roseate spoonbills were hunted nearly to extinction in the 1800s for their pink plumes, which adorned fashionable hats. Their recovery is one of conservation's success stories, and the warm pinks that nearly disappeared from Florida's wetlands now glow again in the wild. This painting captures that welcoming abundance — wings catching light, body open, the whole bird radiating the warmth of a species that survived.
