Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Wild Bee Balm ~ "A Moment Of Harmony" ~ "Songbirds & Friends" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Songbirds & Friends
A Ruby-Throated Hummingbird almost never holds still -- wings beating fifty times a second, the ruby throat catching fire when the light hits it right. So the moments when one settles into a stand of wild bee balm, drinking from those ragged red blooms, feel like a small gift. That is the moment I wanted to keep here: the busiest bird in the garden, perfectly at rest.
Bee balm and hummingbirds belong together -- the flower's tubular red blossoms seem designed for exactly that long bill -- and painting them is painting a partnership that has worked for thousands of years. I built it wet-on-wet, in layers, with no drawing underneath, chasing the iridescence of the throat without ever letting it turn into a hard, jeweled thing.
An original watercolor on paper, one of a kind. 'A Moment Of Harmony' is the pause inside all that motion -- the breath the garden takes between wingbeats.
