Sandhill Crane ~ "Parade" ~ "Oh, to Fly" ~ Watercolor
From the Collection Oh, to Fly!
This sandhill crane painting captures a crane walking with unmistakable ceremony. "Parade" shows a sandhill crane mid-stride — legs stepping high, neck extended, body carried with the kind of deliberate elegance that makes cranes look like they're always going somewhere important. Sandhill cranes walk like they own the ground beneath them, and this painting catches that regal quality.
I painted this freehand on archival cotton rag paper using Kissho Gansai pigments from Kyoto. The walking pose is one of my favorite crane subjects because it reveals the bird's full body architecture — the long legs, the compact body, the way the neck carries most of the bird's visual weight. The warm grays and russet tones of sandhill plumage were built through wet-on-wet mineral pigment washes, with the red crown painted last as the composition's bright anchor.
Among my sandhill crane paintings in the Oh, to Fly! collection, "Parade" is the most grounded. Where "Ascend" is about leaving the earth and "Let's Dance" is about celebration, this one is about presence — a bird that commands attention simply by walking through a room. Sandhill cranes are among the most watched birds during their annual migration — over 500,000 pass through Nebraska's Platte River each spring, creating one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth. Their walking gait is distinctive: each step deliberate and high, as if the ground is worth respecting. The red crown anchors the composition and draws the eye along the bird's movement.
