Soaring Owls Pair Diptych ~ "Shadows of the Sky" ~ Pastel
From the Collection Shadows of the Sky
This owl pastel painting is a diptych — two companion panels meant to hang together, each capturing an owl in soaring flight. The pair creates a visual conversation across your wall: two predators, two sets of enormous wings, two expressions of silent, purposeful power. Owls are the only raptors that hunt in near-total silence — their wing feathers are designed to eliminate turbulence noise — and I wanted that silent intensity to permeate both panels.
I worked in pastel for this piece rather than watercolor, and the medium matters. Pastel gives me a tactile quality that watercolor doesn't — the pigment sits on the surface, creating a velvety depth and texture that suits raptor plumage. The dusty, layered strokes build feathers from the inside out, with warm browns and cool grays creating a dimensional quality that draws you in close. Each panel was composed to stand alone while forming a complete statement when paired.
This diptych is the most ambitious piece in my Shadows of the Sky collection — a body of work that explores raptors and owls through pastel's unique capabilities. Where my watercolor collections celebrate color and fluidity, Shadows of the Sky celebrates form, texture, and the drama of birds that hunt. Owls' specialized wing feathers have leading edges that break turbulence into micro-vortices, eliminating the sound that other birds' wings make in flight. That evolutionary engineering — silent power — is what I wanted the pastels to capture. The medium's tactile surface quality creates a physical depth that echoes the layered softness of owl plumage, where every feather serves both insulation and stealth.
